Prior to Denver, Ryan worked as an anchor, reporter, photographer, producer and assignment editor at TV stations in Wichita, Kan., and Fort Smith, Ark.
Ryan has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism and a master’s from the University of Colorado at Denver.
The largest bank in the nation has reportedly yanked its ads from all NBC News broadcasts on a temporary basis amid an uproar over host Megyn Kelly’s upcoming interview with controversial Austin-based radio host Alex Jones, according to published reports. The Hollywood Reporter and other news outlets reported Monday evening that JPMorgan Chase & Co. had advised NBC it was pulling all scheduled on-air and digital ads until after Kelly’s interview with Jones airs.
The banking giant reportedly wants to ensure its ads don’t air adjacent to promos for the Father’s Day interview with Jones, who has previously claimed that the attack at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., that left more than two dozen students and staff dead was a made-up news event. The interview was the subject of considerable anger on social media Monday after Kelly heavily promoted it during her Sunday night news show.
Kristin Lemkau, the chief marketing officer for Chase, tweeted Monday that she was “repulsed” that Jones was getting airtime on NBC.
Chase is, thus far, the only business to publicly announce plans to pull ads from Kelly’s show and other NBC News broadcasts.
Jones has made Austin headlines several times in recent weeks. He was sued by Greek yogurt manufacturer Chobani, a case that was later settled. And Jones fought his ex-wife for custody of their children.
There’s a new face heading up the marketing efforts for Austin TV stations KXAN and KBVO.
Dax Dobbs has been named marketing director for the city’s NBC and MyNetworkTV affiliates, which are both owned by Texas-based Nexstar Media Group.
“Dax has a long-term record of success in developing award-winning multi-platform promotions and marketing campaigns for stations’ local and national content offerings,” said Eric Lassberg, vice president and general manager for KXAN and KBVO. “At Nexstar, our local audiences remain at the center of every decision that we make and we are committed to delivering valuable local content to our local viewing communities in real time. With Dax’s extensive experience in cross-platform promotions, large scale video production and strategic project management, we are confident that he is the ideal candidate to lead the marketing initiatives of KXAN and KBVO.”
Dobbs most recently worked at Austin ABC affiliate KVUE, serving as brand manager and creative director. He’s a graduate of the University of Southern California and worked for Paramount Pictures and behind the scenes on a number of television shows earlier in his career.
“I am excited to join Nexstar and look forward to working with Eric and the exceptional teams at KXAN and KBVO to further strengthen our local broadcast news brands, web/mobile content concepts and social media engagement initiatives,” Dobbs said. “In this new role, I will leverage the news programming production, branding and marketing experience built over my career to generate results, increase audience engagement and enhance the overall experience for viewers and advertisers, while developing new opportunities to drive revenue and market share growth.”
In the race to keep you informed before you head to work or school each morning, two Austin TV stations are duking it out for first place.
ABC affiliate KVUE and NBC affiliate KXAN have been relatively close in the pre-dawn hours for the past several years, with KXAN winning most head-to-head competitions. May was different, though, with KVUE taking the top spot at 4:30 a.m., 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., according to Nielsen.
“This win was all about teamwork,” KVUE president and general manager Kristie Gonzales said. “From the producers and staff behind the scenes, to the team you wake up to every morning, each person put their heart and soul into making ‘Daybreak’ the best morning newscast in Austin.”
KVUE also was home to the top-rated midday newscast.
Evenings, KXAN continues to be the station to beat, dominating at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. “KXAN News at 6,” for instance, draws more viewers than the second- and third-place stations combined.
In primetime, NBC was No. 1, followed by CBS, ABC, Fox, The CW and then MyNetworkTV.
