Alert, alert: A very Austin thing is happening. Austin-born actor Glen Powell will be inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame in May during a Richard Linklater movie premiere at Paramount Theatre. (All that sentence needs is a taco reference and a "Hook 'em!" and they may just make us mayor.)

Powell, who recently starred in "Top Gun: Maverick," joins previous inductees Renée Zellweger, Luke Wilson, Jesse Plemons, Farrah Fawcett and more in the hall of fame. The awards are hosted by Austin Film Society every year. In 2023, actress Margo Martindale, producer Michael De Luca, indie film power couple Janet and John Pierson, and actor Jonathan Majors were inducted into the hall of fame.

"It's an honor to be part of inducting a fellow Austinite, my friend and collaborator Glen Powell, into the Texas Film Hall of Fame," said filmmaker Richard Linklater in an emailed statement.

Powell will be honored on May 15 at the premiere of "Hit Man" at the Paramount. "Hit Man" is inspired by a 2001 Texas Monthly article about Gary Johnson, a professional killer in Houston. The movie follows a professor who finds he has a talent for fake hit-manning. Powell stars in the movie with Adria Arjona, Austin Amelio, Sanjay Rao and Retta. (More information on the screening is available at austinfilm.org.)

Powell also produced and co-wrote the movie with Linklater. "Hit Man" will release in some theaters on May 24 and on Netflix June 7.

On May 16, Austin Film Society is hosting a "Toast to Texas Film" event to celebrate Powell's induction and to fundraise for its artistic and educational programs.
