Jo’s Coffee opens sleek, modernist café inside The Waller at Symphony Square

When outdoor café Jo’s Coffee originally opened on South Congress Avenue in 1999, you could count the number of residential towers in downtown Austin on one hand.

Twenty-five years later, the Bunkhouse-operated Jo’s occupies one of the newest sleek behemoths. The cafe inside the ground floor of The Waller building at Symphony Square (1102 Sabine St.) is the first Jo’s to be located inside a residential building.

Unlike its shabby but charming progenitor, this location is sleek and modernist — with communal tables, leather seating, terrazzo tile, and copper accents — designed in collaboration with renowned architect and designer Michael Hsu.

The shop, which offers indoor and outdoor seating, is the largest of the seven Jo’s locations and serves a roster of coffee drinks; breakfast tacos, burritos and sandwiches in the morning; and several tacos (chicken, picadillo, carnitas, and veggie) after 11 a.m. The Jo’s at Symphony Square also serves local beer, wine and its signature frosè.

Jo’s Coffee at Symphony Square is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
